Fernbank Natural History Museum – Atlanta, Georgia
The Fernbank Natural History Museum is one of the top natural history museums in the southeast. Their permanent exhibits include a timeline of Georgia history, dinosaurs, shells and a hands-on discovery room for younger children. The most popular draw for my son – the dinosaur exhibit, of course.
The highlight of the museum are the giant skeletons in the large atrium in the center of the building. They are Argentinosaurus and Giganotosaurus, stopped in time in a desperate battle for survival. They are surrounded by flying pterodactyls.
The dinosaur displays also include fossils of dinosaur tracks, plants and animals.
The museum does charge admission for the exhibits and the IMAX theater. However, if you have a dinosaur lover, it’s worth the visit.
After the museum, another great stop is the Fernback Science Center. This is a free location geared toward education. The most interesting exhibit was the Fernbank forest exhibit and the butterfly gardens. The forest is kept very hot and humid, however, so be prepared for that. They also have a planetarium, observatory and library.
A trip to Atlanta to visit the Fernbank Museum and the Science Center is worth the trip, especially for families with kids who love science, especially dinosaurs.
